Part 1: The Basics

Lady Serene Luminescence Charlord.

When the magic in my blood blossomed I was supposed to be called The Luminescence, but that never came to pass, so now my middle name is simply a mouthful.

When I lived in Xalia people called me Lumi. Nowadays people call me Lady Serene or simply Serene if I like them enough to allow the informality.

2. Where and when were you born?

I was born in the bed in the Sun Room at home in the family manor.

Oh? Do you want a little more detail? Fine, since you're a foreigner. I was born in the Kingdom of Gallia, in the western province of Gironde, which is the same province that Princess Eleanor hails from. Did you know her family live only a day's ride from my family's lands? But I'm digressing.

I have twenty-one days left until I turn twenty and depending on what calendar you use I was born either in the 236th year of the Republic or in the 517th year of the Age of Humanity. My birthday is on the Waxing Noonday of Ratamber, and if you've not even bothered to learn how my calendar works (rude) before talking to me look over here to work out what that means for yourself.

Who are/were your parents?

Do you have any siblings? What are/were they like?

I have two, an older brother and a younger sister and I shall address them separately.

Where do you live now, and with whom?

I live with my sister and mother in a small townhouse in the capital. Technically my brother lives with us, but in reality he lives in an apartment he rents by the Royal Courts of Justice. He comes home for a family dinner once or twice a week to keep up the illusion but always leaves with the excuse that he'll have to get up too early if he stays.

The house is nothing on our manor back in Gironde, but Mama can't bear to be there ever since father was murdered. Celeste and I still travel there in the summer, in part because the grasslands are beautiful and in part because I don't trust our steward not to be cheating us if he's not kept in line with the occasional visit.

At the moment nothing, nothing at all except a useless decoration. I was going to be a student of history but my application was stonewalled by the Chancellor of the university, then I was going to be a Royal Guard but that Crown Prick Dorian started mewling about not wanting me wielding a weapon around his family, as if he couldn't squash me like a bug if I angered him, so now I'm useless.

Celeste told me the other day that one of her friend's older brothers is setting up a chamber orchestra and is looking for a harpist. Stupid girl, she can't see that he was inviting her to join, even I am the more skilled of the two of us.

Myself? I suppose if you are writing this down then those who read this won't get to admire me in person.

I'm exactly 180cm (or 5'9"), which makes me tall for a Gallian woman, though not overly tall for a Charlord. I can tuck my mother under my chin and almost look my brother in the eye.

My next most noticeable feature would be my hair. It's a very muted ashen blonde and it curls all the way past my waist. I wear it pinned away from my face and loose whenever I can, though sometimes it's more convenient for me to simply pin it up out of the way. I plait my hair in a French braid before I go to sleep to avoid looking like I'm crouching under a hair bush when I wake in the mornings. It takes a lot of effort to maintain but I can assure you that it's more than worth the effort.

My eyes are blue and my nose is very long. It was these features combined with my hair that lead my father and then my captors to believe that they had finally resurrected my ancestral phenotype.

As a whole I'm a well-built woman. I've got strong shoulders and a waist I can't squash in so tightly if I want to bind my shape and my family say I've allowed myself to become far too muscular, but I prefer to be toned and able to deal with threats. I move with grace and energy.

My breasts used to be larger last year before I began exercising in earnest but they're still pretty- and before you ask, no, but feel free to imagine just how lovely they are given how lovely the rest of me is.

Though I am beautiful there are certain parts of my physical appearance that I don't like. I use powder on my face to hide my flaws as I have dark skin under my eyes and I have an ugly little faint brush of freckles over my nose. I have a scar on my forearm where I foolishly decided to block a dagger heading for my face with my arm, but that isn't so noticeable if I wear long lace gloves. My hands and feet are too long for my liking.

Clothing-wise, I wear floor length dresses and copious amounts of lacy accessories, but when I had the choice I preferred to wear loose pants and a shirt, Xalian style. Women don't need to be so primped up, do they? Beauty shines through no matter what.

To which social class do you belong?

I belong to the Gallian land-owning nobility, thanks to the first long-ago Charlord who decided to use his powers to bargain for political power.

Though technically my brother owns the land and my own status exists only as long as I don't wed anyone of a lower status than myself.

...I hate this country.

Do you have any allergies, diseases, or other physical weaknesses?

No, I’m completely healthy… almost completely healthy. While I was making my way home several years ago I caught a lung disease that led me to waste away. My recovery was arduous and though the infection cleared away long ago my lungs sometimes ache sharply in cold weather or if I’ve pushed myself too far. The doctors say it’s not the infection returning but merely some minor scarring from all the coughing and wheezing.

[She is lactose intolerant but has not discovered this fact as her people don't consume dairy products]

Are you right- or left-handed?

I'm right handed though don't take that to mean I can't defend myself with my left hand too.

What does your voice sound like?

As you can hear, I speak with a perfect Gallian accent… as long as I don’t lose control of my emotions and start to speak too rapidly. My elocution lessons, alas, have not managed to defeat my Xalian slurring when I grow too upset.

I’m told I speak too loudly, but honestly that’s only because Gallian women are supposed to be sweet and retiring, though if I need to I can bellow with force.

I can force my pitch down into a husky contralto when I want to pass as a boy, but naturally my voice is just a little higher than I’d prefer. My brother claims I sound like a squawking bird when I really lose my temper.

What words and/or phrases do you use very frequently?

I tend to go ‘Ahh...’ too often when I’m trying to think of how to phrase my thoughts in the most appropriate manner and I do have a bad habit of calling on ‘Mercy’ when I’m trying not to swear any worse.

What do you have in your pockets?

Hmmm… I don’t usually have pockets any more, but will my arm-bag count? I keep it with me wherever I go. Now let’s see...

A small money purse with enough gold coins to support myself if I need to flee, as well as some smaller demoninations for daily use.

A switchblade the length of my smallest finger, inlaid with mother of pearl on the handle. Back in my former life I’d have carried a longer blade, but practically? The vessels that will make a man bleed out fastest are mostly only a fingernail’s width under the skin. I keep it sharp enough that I can gut a man if need be.

A handkerchief, because who wants to be sweaty or snotty? My mother embroidered the pansies for me as I’m medicore enough with the needle that I’d be ashamed to display my own work in public.

A small metal case of pre-rolled clove cigarettes. The case has a mirror on the inside lid so I can check my lipstick hasn’t been mussed.

Lipstick, face powder and a kohl pencil in another little case, just in case I need to touch up my face while out.

Matches. They’re a comfort item nowadays rather than anything I actually use, apart from when I wish to smoke.

I’m told I’m too overt when I’m talking to people. I tend to stare intently, looking for lies and misdirection, as in my former life people were more than happy to lie to me. Perhaps it’s discomforting for some, but I would rather be aware than be tricked.

I bite the tips of my fingers when I’m trying very carefully to control my temper. The habit helps hide my lips if I’m pinching them together.

If I’m paying attention to a talk or lecture I tend to sit far too straight and rigid. Ladies of my rank are supposed to have a good posture, but mine is a soldier’s standing to attention.

Sitting on Mama’s lap as she brushed my hair. She seemed so very tall then so I must have been very young. She was warm and smelt of lavender and felt so very safe there. I remember her praising me for being so pretty, telling me that it meant I’d always be loved

That's a galling question....

I have had plenty of schooling, but not a moment of that teaching is recognised by the Gallian bureaucracy, apparently, so officially I've been taught to read by mother, somehow acquired ten years of learning via moonbeams through my night time window and then had some elocution and music and history lessons between 16 and 19.

Unofficially I was put through the Xalian schooling system, which is far more rigorous than the Gallian system. From six to nine I was living with a small group of other children and we had a tutor to teach us all the basics, then I went into an educational institute with about fifty other children between nine and twelve. My last year there incorporated a large amount of military training since The Trustworthy Poltan decided to dramatically lower the age of conscription.

Once I turned twelve my education became spotter. I was in school less so in order to compensate I would be sent for more intense learning sessions whenever I was off-duty, for though The Trustworthy was sending even the children out to fight he didn't want us to be uneducated.

Three months ago I would have told you that I’m an optimist who was sure that I would find a way in the world. Nowadays the scales have fallen from my eyes and I see that the world does not move for mere determination and talent. If a person hasn’t brownenosed or bribed their way into the favours of the already powerful then they might as well quit trying to advance before they wear themselves out completely, for the only skill required in Gallia is to be able to seem sincere when flattering the delicate egos of those in charge.
