I Am Not A Maiden Fair

Kidnapped as a child, Serene was a prize for the Xalian dictator, a magic-blooded girl who was supposed to lead his people to ascendancy. However, her magic never emerged and she was demoted to just another child soldier

At sixteen she escaped, but three years on and she's still struggling with the fact that though she was born a soft and coddled noblewoman she was raised as a ruthless warrior.

Back home there are consequences if she appears to be going back to her Xalian ways, but here in the anonymity of another kidnapping she seeks to find a middle path, one that lets her use her specialised skills while allowing her to hold onto her empathy and her desire to make sure no one else ever has to be twisted by forces outside of their control.

PLAYER NAME:Dilly

CHARACTER NAME: Serene Charlord ([personal profile] sereneflame)

SERIES: Original

CURRENT CANONPOINT: Aged 20, having been rejected for Royal Guard duty

REQUESTED CANONPOINT: Aged 22 by her calendar, 600 days later.

Here is a link to a summary of her time at home.

PERSONALITY CHANGES: Serene's gained a lot of perspective in her two years away.

Time and experience have dulled her hurt at being rejected by the highest levels of her society. Her first step in healing the sting was choosing to walk away rather than going back to try and impress them with her "pyromancy" and knowledge of other universes, and from then on she's deliberately been starting off with a clean slate again and again. By travelling with Dr Borekko from community to community, she's learnt from him both how to be patient about earning respect from strangers and to maintain a certain flexibility when looking for her place in society. She's no longer so immediately competitive, though that is more from learning a certain mindfulness rather than losing those qualities altogether.

She's started to discover who she's comfortable being: an active defender of the weak, a warrior magician who wields her fire but mainly depends on her blades in battle. She's a bit more willing to play the long game when it comes to rising to the top of the pack, having slowly learned that respect is best earned through proving her steadfastness and reliability rather than attempting to be the best at posturing.

In her time with ALASTAIR Serene was told about non-sentient animals as food sources and beasts of burden and found the concept repugnant, since her society banned animal husbandry over half a millennia ago, but now she's lived with the Oryx nomads tending to camels she's had to admit she was very wrong about her societal assumptions.

She's come to understand that her people's philosophy on food is very black and white. She's still adamant that hunting sentient beings and hunting for sport is disgusting, but her time with the Crowmen and their culture of solemn corpse consumption has opened her eyes to the fact that meat eaters can still be respectful of the people that they are eating. She can accept eating carrion and at a pinch killing non-sentient animals cleanly and away from their kin if it's for survival, but she still practices her dietary restrictions. She is now of the modified opinion that meat should be eaten with respect, thinking of the individual who died in order to allow another life to continue.

She's going to be incredibly pleased to see other humans again for the sake of her ego, for her flat-faced skull is unappealing to long-faced and beaked sentients and she's missed having people look at her and seeing someone beautiful. Her arrogance has taken a real beating, for her looks and her heritage have meant nothing at all in the communities she's moved into, which initially lead to many nights of pique and sulking as she became uncomfortably aware how much of her self-worth she hinges on being immediately recognised as being obviously noble-blooded and beautiful. She knows now that her bloodline isn't actually unique, for there is more than one Mance stone in the world, and thus the humen and the Charlords are only top of the pack for as long as no one else decides to excavate out more magic sources. She's not inherited anything special, for her magic is a gift from ALASTAIR rather than an innately awakened talent, and thus what she suffered through as a child and an adolescent is far less justifiable than it had once seemed.

She's still a work in progress, but overall she's a bit chiller and more patient than she was before.

She now has a far more comprehensive dislike of all felines.

ABILITY ADJUSTMENTS:
Serene's now adept at riding camels, tending to their needs and fighting on camelback. She knows how to wield a lance. She is now far rustier at the harp, having not played in years.

She also knows theoretically how to deflesh a corpse as part of a funerary rite. She's acted as a doctor's assistant to Dr Borekko and has learnt from him how to provide basic medical aid, though much of her learning is rooted in using herbs that won't be available on other worlds.

Mance Stone
The Origin of Magic

Once upon a time a group of human miners digging in the mountain now known as Mance Mountain stumbled upon a beautiful gemstone that glowed from within. They passed it around to each other and marvelled at its unwordly beauty, talking excitedly of how rich they would be if they found the right buyer. However, the riches they gained were far more profound.

In total twelve people touched the gem and to them an understanding and mastery over an aspect of the physical realm was bestowed. As the stone was passed hand to hand its glow grew dimmer until it crumbled to dust in the hands of the thirteen miner, seemingly bestowing her with nothing.

These twelve kept their gifts a secret for a short time, sharing their powers with each other, but soon began to realise their implications. Within several years they had raised themselves from humble miners to powerful lords and ladies, able to demand all the riches and land and suitors they desired. Their influence is great enough that the months of the year were renamed for the twelve who had touched the stone, in the order which the stone was passed about hand to hand.

Mance Mountain no longer exists, for waves of miners of all species descended upon the modest peak and tore it apart in a desperate search for another Mance Stone. Vicious, bloody magical wars were waged over who controlled the mountain but in the end those wars proved pointless, for no other stones were ever found. The pulverised rock of Mance Mountain paves the roads through the entire continent, as in the end selling this rock proved the only way to recoup the massive investments poured into dismantling the mountain.

The magic bestowed by the Mance stone no longer exists either, for the magic grew weaker in each generation born. Where the first Mancers could extend their powers for as far as they could see into the distance, their twelth generation descendants had to be physically touching whatever they wished to manipulate. Magic came into the world over five hundred years ago and died out two hundred years ago.

Thermomancy: The Manipulation of Heat

The first Thermomancer was Gostus. Her notable current descendant is Elliot Reeves.

Thermomancy is the ability to move about heat energy. This is a power of balance, for the total heat in the system under the thermomancer's control remains in equilibrium.

A skilled Thermomancer can sense the ambient heat of his surroundings and can feel with an experimental push or pull just how much heat is needed to change an object's temperature.

Thermomancers can, among many other tricks, create ice, boil water, keep the air about them at an ambient temperature, tell if someone is running a fever and freeze the air in a person's lungs.

Thermomancers have several weaknesses: Firstly, they aren't invulnerable to extremes in temperature, though they can adjust their own temperature quickly. Thermomancers are also very prone to sunburn as their ambient temperature adjustments mean they don't notice when the sun is blazing too fiercely on their skin. They're also known for standing out with their clothing, as they don't have to dress for the weather.

Electromancy: The Manipulation of Electric Charge

The first Electromancer was Suvenry

Electromancy is the power to manipulate the movement of electrons. The most powerful Electromancer can point to two distant places and pull apart their polarities enough that upon relaxing their manipulation a snap of lightning will travel between one point to the other. They can sense electrical impulses in the world around them.

Electromancy has so many possible uses that anyone who lives in an electric age could easily imagine, but in Callirhoe the uses of electricity have yet to be discovered. The Electromancers had to explore their powers on their own. They discovered they were able to charge weapons and that they could make thin metal wires glow, but the technology of the world around them was not sufficient to capitalise on the new understanding of lightning that the Electromancers brought to the world.

Electromancy was one of the few skills where the Mancers benefited from the dimming of their powers, for though they were no longer able to produce great bolts of lightning as their ancestors once had they were able to work delicately enough to manipulate the human body. One branch of Suvenry's line advanced the Callirhoan understanding of medicine by their study of sapient anatomy and the activity of the neurons. It was a woman in the tenth generation who perfected the skill of using electric currents between her fingers to restart a heart, but that skill was lost by the time her great-grandchildren were born powerless.

Pyromancy: The Manipulation of Combustion

The first Pyromancer was Bylian. His notable ancestors include Inferno No-Land, Serene Charlord and Cinder.

Pyormancy is the ability to create combustions. At first glance this power looks very similar to Thermomancy as Thermomencers are able to create fire is they concentrate enough energy into a single point, but the two powers are very different. It is not a power of balance, though the effect achieved is more more impressive than the effort put in, for if the initial sparks are set correctly the reaction will fuel itself.

Unlike a Thermomancer, a Pyromancer cannot heat an object unless they create a fire with which to do so, but they are able to create fires in the air by combusting pure oxygen. A pyromancer cannot divert heat away from themselves to avoid being burnt, but they are able to suppress combustion reactions within their sphere of influence.

Gravomancy: The Manipulation of Gravity

The first Gravomancer was Ratamber. His notable descendents include King Richard and Prince Dorian

Necromancy: The Manipulation of Rot

The first Necromancer was Mesudius

Kinetomancy: The Manipulation of Velocity

The first Kinetomancer was Nictoary

Kinetomancy is another power of balance, involving the transference of velocity from one system to another. A kinetomancer can move with great bursts of speed, stealing the speed from the legs of his opponent to give to himself.

Kinetomancers would carry devices to generate velocity, ranging from a simple stone on a string to swing around above their head to more complex spring-loaded cranking devices.

This power also allows a kinetomancer to divert an object's velocity. A kinetomancer can divert the path of a flying device, such as an arrow, sending it back in the direction it came from with the same speed with which it arrived.

Kinetomancers can also use their powers to leap, though they have to be very careful about landing to ensure that they don't break their legs, shoving all of their falling velocity into the velocity-generating device.

Magnetomancy: The Manipulation of Magnetic Fields

The first Magnetomacer was Husamber

Chronomancy: The Manipulation of Time

The first Chronomander was Vyctorius. Her notable descendants include Queen Sasana and Prince Dorian

Pheromancy: The Manipulation of Scents

The first Pheromacer was Lamboary

Vibromancy: The Manipulation of Pressure Waves

The first Vibromacer was Polian. His notable descendants include the Royal Xalians, who inbred to the point of dying out.

Photomancy: The Manipulation of Light

The first Photomacer was Fylander

Nucleomancy: The Manipulation of Radioactive Decay

The first Nucleomacer was Tonborius.

A Nucleomancy is a power of balance. A Nucleomancer can cause an object to become radioactive by redirecting and concentrating radiation from the sun. The range of lightwaves a Nucleomancer and sense and manipulate are at far higher frequencies than a Photomancer. Nucleomancers are able to redirect radiation coming into their sphere of influence away from themselves, meaning that they are in no danger of being irradiated by their own creations.

Nucleomancy was even less understood by the people of Callirhoe when it first emerged, for radiation had not been discovered. Tonborius was unable to explain his powers in ways other than that he could feel the power of the sun and was able to imbue other objects with that power. When he discovered how to make objects glow or emit heat long after he finished working on them his powers won him far more acclaim. He would radiate floors or walls in homes to provide a source of heat for anyone who needed the help. He taught his children this power, raising them to believe that their gift should be shared with anyone in need.

This, of course, was a disaster. Those who lived in these homes slowly sickened and prone to miscarriages. The children born were sickly and short-lived. These symptoms took decades to show up and Tonborius refused to accept that these could be a result of his powers.

Seventy years after the Mance stone granted power to the Mancers, Tonborius' descendants were deemed inherently too dangerous and were exterminated by the an alliance of other Mancers. All that he created was destroyed and buried deep to the cost of many other lives from the radioactive dust stirred up during dismantlement.

The Mance Stone's Last Gift

The first Mother of the Horned Ones was Debrian. Her notable descendants include Queen Sasana and Prince Dorian

First Impressions
Demeanour:
Serene is a confident woman. She's got a gorgeous face and she knows it. She smiles a lot when interacting with others, though if they annoy her she'll switch to a hard glare. She walks with her back straight and her shoulders broad like the soldier she used to be. She's alert regarding her surroundings. She has a tendency to stare hard at the person she's talking to, looking for their honesty as they speak. If called out she will try to rein this impulse in, as she knows it can be offputting.

Visual:
Serene is 5'9, broad-bodied and strongly-muscled, especially on her upper limbs. She has a long nose, blue eyes and curly ashen blonde hair that falls past her waist.

Serene's hands are narrow and calloused and her fingers are long. She keeps her nails short and neat.

Serene comes from a culture where women don't customarily cut their body hair. Her body hair is fine and blonde.

Serene is eighteen years old and looks her age, but as her world has shorter years than ours she believes she is twenty.

Fashion:
Serene is conscious of how appearances can influence people's judgement of her, so always strives to look good.

If it's a still and sunny day she'll wear her hair loose, but if any weather or activity threatens to turn her into a ball of frizz she'll pin her hair up in elaborate styles held together with jewelled combs and pins. She wears her amethyst and pearl necklace whenever she can, flaunting her richness.

If she has access to make up she'll paint her lips pink, use eye shadow to compensate for her pale lashes and hide the darker circles under her eye with powder.

She'll mimic the fashion of the place she's living in, looking to stand out in the crowd by being the prettiest within the constraints of acceptable beauty standards rather than breaking the rules. However she refuses to wear black on her upper half, as she's pale enough the colour is draining, and she has an aversion to reds after a childhood forced to wear the colour.

Sounds:
Serene has a high voice and a tendency to get loud if she's excited. When speaking normally she'll be perceived as having a refined accent, but if she gets upset enough to speak rapidly this accent will slip to something that's lower class. She's an excellent singer with a sweet soprano voice.

Smells:
Serene comes from a world without antiperspirants, but she keeps herself clean. If she's been exercising she'll smell of clean sweat. If she has access to essential oils she'll dab her neck with lavender or sandalwood.

She smokes clove cigarettes, though she limits herself to one a day, so if she's been smoking indoors she'll smell of tobacco and cloves. She tries to smoke outdoors so the wind can stop her clothes from smelling musty.

Backtagging:
I'm fine with backtagging for important threads, though if it's just a casual network conversation I'm more likely to let it drop if too many other threads pop up. If there's been more than a week between my post and your reply I'm unlikely to respond. Ping me on any of my contact methods if you want to drop a thread and just discuss how we should handwave the ending.

Fourth Walling:
Hard to do, since Serene is from an original universe. However, this is a personal pet hate of mine so I won't participate in any fourth-walling between other characters.

Contacting Me:
I am a night owl who lives in the UK. On weekdays I get home around 6pm and will often be available until midnight. On Friday and Saturday I may be up for far later.

My plurk is [plurk.com profile] squigglebat. Inbox this account if you don't want to use plurk.

I will not play the following CR
I will not play out any plots involving self harm or suicidal ideation. If you want to play out these story lines and we already have established CR I'll happily play with you before the storyline begins and after it resolves completely, but during the storyline itself I'm going to bend ICness and have Serene remain blissfully ignorant of what's going on.

If you or your character are under eighteen, please don't initiate any sexual RP with me and please be honest with me if I try initiate any sexual RP with you. I have contact with vulnerable children at my workplace and my employers will take a very dim view of cybersex involving minors, real or imaginary.

If your character is involved in a paedophilic relationship, eg Loveless characters, no matter how IC this is please don't tag me. I find the concept repugnant and find it difficult to maintain the IC/OOC divide around this sort of play.

Physical Affection
Touching Serene:
She's happy to accept light physical touches from friendly people: hands on her shoulder, brief touches to her arm or knee, and she'll give the same in return. She likes having her hair played with as long as the person playing asks her permission first.

However if your character is blatantly using this acceptance to get a little thrill by stroking her when she's not given any sign she's open for sexual play she's going to be very unimpressed and will drag their hand from her.

If your character sneaks up and touching her from behind she's going to elbow them before realising they're not a threat. She deals strong blows.

Hugging Serene:
Serene is very open to physical comfort and enjoys both brief and extended hugs from those she likes. She's got strong arms and a tendency to squeeze tight.

If your character is sleeping in close proximity to Serene she'll likely wriggle closer to be able to hug onto them, since she falls asleep easier with the comfort of someone beside her.

Flirting with Serene:
This depends entirely on her mood and how she perceives your character. If she's feeling grumpy she'll respond with a glare but if she's in a good mood and finds your character mildly attractive she'll play along. She doesn't see flirting as a commitment to go any further. Her flirting style involves lots of bright laughter, bright smiles, pointed touches and innuendo.

Kissing Serene:
Serene will accept friendly kisses to her cheek from her friends and return the gesture too, though it is not part of her culture.

If she's been flirting with your character she'll just as likely lean in for a kiss as wait for them to give her one.

Propositioning Serene:
If she's got an itch that needs scratching and she's responding well to your character's flirting she'll most likely say yes. If she thinks of your character as beneath her standards she might laugh in their face for thinking she's in their league.

Serene's views on sex:
Serene's lines between close friendship and a sexual relationship are very blurred. Serene believes that love is not a prerequisite to sex but friendship is an absolute must. Sexual play can be bonding amongst friends and she'll engage in lovemaking with those she's relaxed with and cares for.

In her current situation she knows looking for a forever partner is a ridiculous goal, but she's open to casual, affectionate relationships. She's not naturally monogamous in these sorts of situations but could be inclined towards sticking with one sexual partner if they're painfully monogamous and she likes them enough.

People who profess their love before they've known her for several years make her eyes roll. She is a firm believer that love is something one can only fully feel when one knows the other person's secrets and lies and habits and weaknesses. Anything involving less than that is an infatuation based on the idea of a person rather than true knowledge of a person. This view comes from being in love all of once with Cinder, a boy she grew up with from the age of seven. He died three years ago and she's still not completely over him.

Her tastes run more towards men than women, but she still finds enjoyment in sleeping with women. She comes from a land with multiple sentient species and is open to being sexually affectionate with non-human humanoids. My own personal preference here: Humanesque genitals only. Extra nipples are fine but no penis sheathes or knotting please.

For her, getting off is the goal and the method used is less important than both parties enjoying getting there. She'll only use fingers and mouths with men unless they provide reliable contraceptives.

Serene's turnoffs:
For Serene, sex is something shared between equals. Someone too dominant or too submissive weird her out, though she'll enjoy occasionally taking charge of the action with a submissive partner. She won't consent to being immobilised.

Serene enjoys dirty talk but abusive language will earn her partner a hard slap on the face and she'll immediately leave. She refuses to use abusive language with the person she's sleeping with.

Don't call her genitals a cunt. Her vulva is a flower with petals and nectar and a bud.

She enjoys a bit of rough and tumble but is again completely put off by S&M. She'll likely tell others that's what your character is into to warn them from getting into your character's bed.

She's got no problem with period sex but introducing other waste fluids will result in her leaving the bed sharply and telling the world what a foul person your character is. On a related note, she dismisses all butt stuff as gross, as the anus is where shit lives.

Physical Violence
Sparring with Serene:
Serene is eager to find a sparring partner or partners to practice with. She fights with a sword and a knife and is skilled with hand to hand combat. The style she's been taught is close to ju-jitsu, as she was a child when she began learning and needed something to help her deal with opponents who had a greater reach than her.

Serene is a very competitive person and if she loses she'll challenge your character to fight again as soon as they and she are recovered. She takes losing as a personal challenge to improve herself. If she cannot work out the trick to defeating your character she'll eventually swallow her pride and ask for tips on how to improve her technique.

Attacking Serene:
Serene is an ex-child soldier and will meet an attack with a comeback unless it's very clear your character badly outmatches her.

In a real match Serene fights dirty, aiming to take down her attackers hard and fast. She carries a switchblade with her even when she's not wearing her sword and if your character presents a credible threat to her safety she'll pull it out and use it.

Serene is willing and able to kill. She'll happily disfigure a person who's attacking her in order to make sure that others know she's not someone to be messed with.

Serene holds grudges.

Mildly Injuring Serene:
Ask first but I will likely say yes if you are willing to play out the consequences. She'll hold a grudge when it comes to deliberate injuries and will dislike your character even if she doesn't seek out revenge.

She'll forgive accidental injury if your character is immediately sincerely apologetic but she'll be prone to be more wary of them from then on if she suspects that sort of injury could happen to her again.

Disfiguring Serene:
Again, ask first, but I am likely to agree if we can work out the long term consequences for this action. Serene places great stock in her looks and the health of her body and so will be devastated to be crippled or left ugly, even if the injury will likely fade.

If your character inflicted this on her deliberately she will likely try to kill them in return, or at least injure them worse than they injured her. She'll stoop to spreading false rumours, turning others against them and seeking allies to do her dirty work if she's outmatched enough she won't be able to hurt them herself.

Killing Serene:
If the game involves permadeath: No.

If the game has a resurrection mechanic, refer to the section on disfiguring.

Supernatural contact
Using beneficial magic on Serene:
Is likely going to win her right over to your character's side, as she can see a useful ally when she meets one.

Using detrimental magic on Serene:
Will make Serene fear your character and earn Serene's enmity. Ask before using so we can plot out the consequences.

Reading Serene's mind:
This is fine by me, but give warning so that I know how deeply they can see into her mind. I'm generally happy with your character being able to detect that Serene is telling lies or has a nasty past.

However, Serene will be very freaked out by these abilities. If your character uses their mindreading to one-up her she will most likely avoid being in their presence if she can.

Manipulating Serene's mind:
Ask first, but I will likely agree if you're willing to play out the consequences. Serene will feel violated by the contact if she discovers that it happened, but depending on the plot it might not strictly be necessary for her to realise that this has happened.

Manipulating Serene's body:
As first, but again, if you are willing to play out the consequences I am likely to agree. Serene will feel violated, but if your character manipulated her in order to keep her from harm that couldn't be prevented by telling her what to do she will likely forgive them.

However, with all these magical powers, if she feels they make your character a threat she may very well try to kill them before they can harm her or the people she cares for any further.

On the planet Callirhoe the lunar cycle is in harmony with the solar cycle. There are 336 days in each year, broken into 12 months with 4 weeks of 7 days.

Days of the Month

SundayDawndayMorndayNoondayEvedayDarkdayMoonday
Young1234567
Wax891011121314
Wane15161718192021
Old22232425262728

Serene's birthday is the 11th of the month, but she will refer to this as Waxing Noonday or wax-noon

Months of the year

Spring Summer
Gostus Suvenry Bylian Ratamber Mesudius Nictoary
Begins at Vernal Equinox Begins at Northern Solstice
Autumn Winter
Husamber Vyctorius Lamboary Polian Fylander Tonborius
Begins at Autumnal Equinox Begins at Southern Solstice

Each month is named for one of the twelve original Mancers, in the order in which they gained their magic.

Implications

As Callirhoe's years are shorter than those on earth, humans from each of these planets will have different frames of reference.

Serene considers herself to be a month away from twenty, but by Earth counting that makes her 18 years and 3 months.
